Dawna Caldwell is founder of Happy Tails to You Dog Training. Dawna studied veterinary science at UC Davis until she realized that the field of animal behavior was her true calling.

As a non-profit with more than 40 cumulative years of experience, we strive to provide, small, cost effective classes to help you raise a well-behaved and happy dog using purely positive reinforcement based (R+) training methods. Our training program is designed to not only help your dog to just become a Canine Good Citizen, but also develop a strong bond. We also offer advanced classes geared towards dog sports like AKC Obedience, AKC Rally, Agility, Scent Work to name a few. You start in our level 1, if your puppy is younger then 18 weeks. Then you graduate to the next level when the instructor lets you know.

Puppies get to play, interact and / or observe other puppies and meet other people, explore a variety of objects, surfaces, and sounds. If a puppy is too shy and or afraid, we will slowly introduce the puppy to the rest of the puppies on your puppy's own terms. We also incorporate: 1) Several settling sessions, where your pup learns to chill on their mat. 2) Handling games, does your puppy run away when you come close? Does he bite when picking him up? or putting on the collar or harness? Bring novel treats, treats your puppy never had before 3) Learning their name and come when called 4) Learning to share 5) Saying hi nicely and confidently to people

What to bring: proof of puppy's first set of vaccination, a rested puppy, a mat or towel that can function as their bed/place, treats your puppy never had before, water and a bowl

New six week class starting for puppies eight weeks till six months:

The AKC STAR Puppy Program is designed to get you and your puppy of to a great starts. The AKC STAR puppy requires owners to attend a basic six week puppy class with their puppy. For puppies between eight weeks and six months of age at the start of class, we require that the puppies had at least one set of shots, and have been with the new family for a week.


Puppy's brains are like sponges, and they can learn so much their first couple of months after you get them home. Training does not start in class. Every minute of the day, they are learning and observing. Start them early, and they can achieve great things! In this class, we will work on lots of engagement with you through play with you and communicate with your pup. We will teach and practice: come when called, sit and down, heel position, loose leash walking, drop it on cue, leave it, stay, and do a trick every week. We go over crate training ( bring their crate to class), crate game, inappropriate chewing, how to stop a puppy from biting, barking, jumping, digging, door manners, and we will address grooming and handling.


The AKC STAR Puppy Program is designed to get you and your puppy of to a great starts. The AKC STAR puppy requires owners to attend a basic six week puppy class with their puppy. For puppies to a year old and who have graduated from the AKC STAR Puppy 1 or graduated from a similar beginner puppy class. STAR stands for: Socialization, Training, Activity and Responsible Owner. We will follow up on your pup's skills learned in Puppy 1 class. We will work on generalizing their skills solidifying their verbal cues and raising criteria in their stays, wait, come when called and loose leash walking! We also introduce a trick every week. If the class is compatible we might get some play in at the end of each class as in our puppy 1 class.

This is a six-week class for dogs six months and older, we meet at 1770 Hester Avenue in San Jose, it is inside the training's facility. Small class: Four students max. We go over the basics, like sit and down and stay and wait. We will work on; leave it, drop it, loose leash walking, go to bed, polite greetings and come when called. This is a beginner obedience class and great refresher class. For dogs six months and older Maximum four dogs in class, all dogs stay on leash and have to be okay with other dogs and people in the same room, let me know if you have any questions or concerns about your dog being able to participate! We offer private training sessions as well at our training facility in San Jose.
