User FAQs

The native plant community here is found nowhere else in the East Bay, representing a relic plant association found only in certain areas along California's coast where ideal soil and climatic conditions exist. Unique plant species and rare vegetation make this preserve a true gem.

The plants originated in the distant past along the southern coast of California when the climate was moister and tempered by the cool coastal fog. Today, similar vegetation is found on the islands off the Santa Barbara coast and in isolated pockets on the mainland coast from Point Conception to Montara Mountain, south of San Francisco. Past climates and geologic history have shaped the unique vegetation association found here.

The 1.7-mile loop trail traverses a wide variety of terrain, descending into a mature bay forest, following the contour for about half a mile, and then ascending to the botanically rich upper trail. You'll encounter a diverse range of plant species and have the opportunity to reflect on your sense of place in this unique environment.

Due to the fragile nature of the preserve, dogs, bicycles, and horses are prohibited, except on the Skyline National Trail. Jogging is discouraged, and visitors are asked to respect the environment and other visitors.

Visitors can enjoy restrooms and a self-guided, botanic interpretive trail. The preserve is also accessible by public transportation, with transit information available through AC Transit 511.
