While everything else about the evening of July 6, 2021, seemed ordinary, Hilda Alvarez immediately knew something was not right with her husband Javier. When she noticed Javier’s face drooping and his arm hanging to one side, Hilda quickly jumped into action and called 911. From the moment the couple arrived by ambulance at Queen of the Valley Hospital’s Emergency Department, she recalled how fast everything transpired.

Bonnie Kasamatsu and her late husband Ken emulated the importance of service throughout their marriage, a value they have passed along to their two daughters. Last December, Bonnie donated the required minimum distribution from Ken’s IRA to support the hospital’s Emergency Department-ICU project. Noting the tax advantages to such a gift, Bonnie describes it as “a smart way to spend your money,” and with a smile, as “something Kenny would have done.”

Susan Heninger remembers everything about the experience of delivering her twins, Andrew and Laura, at Emanate Health Queen of the Valley Hospital in November 1978. Nearly 25 years later, Susan decided to make her first gift to the NICU to commemorate the twins’ birthday and has continued this annual giving “tradition” ever since. “Giving even a little financial support to an organization that I admire is a worthwhile thing to do.”

Maria Porras loves meeting new employees and helping to train them at Queen of the Valley Hospital. She is a proud donor to the Foundation, giving back through payroll deduction. “I know that the little I contribute makes a difference," said Maria, "and if you’re willing to spend five dollars on a cup of coffee, you won’t see the difference in your check."

Larry Fetters shares his experience at the Emanate Health Heart Care Center at Inter-Community Hospital. “I consider myself to be so fortunate to live in an area that has such an outstanding cardiac facility," said Larry, "and they saved my life."

With more than three decades working as a critical care registered nurse, Nestor Batugal is a proud member of the Cath Lab team at Emanate Health Heart Care Center. At all of his previous hospitals, Nestor has given back to their foundations and continues that tradition at Emanate Health. "I want to be supporting of my company because they're supporting me."
