SVSTI can not stress enough the importance of the immunizations requirements needed before we can place you for Externships. The placement process begins AFTER your required immunization documents are received. The Clinical site placement process can take several weeks.

SVSTI requires every potential student to be at least 17 years of age and hold a minimum of a high school diploma, GED or equivalent. If you do not have a GED certificate, High School Diploma or Transcripts you may contact either of the following agencies to obtain a Certificate of Proficiency.

CHSPE (California High School Proficiency Examination): called “Certificate of Proficiency” is legally equivalent to a high school diploma. For information contact California Proficiency Testing at (866) 342-4773. www.chspe.net

You will need a copy of your high school diploma/equivalent or college transcripts for the Surgical Technology Certificate Program & Sterile Processing Program. If you graduated school in a foreign Country, you would need to have them verified and/or translated to English.

These requirements are based on the California State Department of Health Services recommendations and clinical facility requirements. You will need to have completed the following immunizations and provide documentation to the program director. Titers will be drawn and if you are no longer immune, you must receive the immunization (or a booster).

You must provide proof of all immunizations and titer results before you the externship placement begins.

1. Tetanus/Diphtheria/whooping cough (TDaP) –Must show proof of vaccination (dated within 10 years). If no proof is available - a booster is required

2. Mantoux (Tuberculous) Test (PPD)- Gold Interferon / QuantiFERON blood test (best option – 1 step) (Ask your doctor to SCHEDULE this TB TEST AT THE SAME TIME AS YOUR TITER blood test for #’s 4,5,6)

TWO TEST / Two-step PPD SKIN test PPD antigen is injected; student must have area read 3 days after injection.

If negative, a second PPD antigen is injected under the skin 4 days later
