Ellen P: Great local & small business find. The shop is stocked with high quality products & kitchen supplies you don’t see everyday. Took a knife sharpening class & learned a bunch! Josh, the owner, is lovely. I always purchase something from these guys when I’m in this part of SF.

Tiffany Mankins: Very great store. Friendly staff

Katherine Meng: This is the only review I'm giving to somewhere I've never been. However, as soon as I asked my NY chef friend where he gets his knives, he said this spot. I scrolled the website and was very envious that the shop isn't near me.

Brandon Schattel: Absolutely an amazing experience shopping with Bernal Cutlery. My vintage knife was shipped lightning fast and packed very well. The unboxing was a great treat and extremely professional looking. Top notch job all around! Zero complaints here.

Matthew Bottoms: This place might be a cooks dream. I have shopped a few times online with great service but was blown away when I visited the store. Left with a much needed bread knife after trying over a dozen. So many toys here.

April Zheng: Love this store. It is an absolute haven for anyone passionate about the art of blades. From the moment you step inside, you're greeted by a captivating array of knives, each one exuding quality craftsmanship and expertise. The staff here are not only knowledgeable but also incredibly friendly and eager to assist, making the shopping experience both informative and enjoyable. Whether you're a seasoned chef or a culinary enthusiast, Bernal Cutlery offers acurated selection of tools to elevate your kitchen game. Fun to test the Santoku blade slicing the tomamto 🍅

Nicholas Pun: Great spot to get a really nice knife. They have a huge stock and selection and really know their stuff. Would recommend taking your time and taking to them to find a nice that suits your needs

Kelsey Japs: I purchased some Japanese knives from here and it was a fantastic experience. They were super knowledgable on different types of knives and the key ones to get for cooking style. Highly recommend.

Alex Finlay V: Great shop for high end kitchen utensils, and knife sharpening.

Matt Harris: Best knife store I have found. Top quality products. Great variety.

Roman Plascencia: . I've been coming to this store for at least three years now and have always loved my experiences here! I've bought knives, kitchen stuff, and! I've had my custom and some regular knives sharpening here with no issue ever, I've always been helped both cordially and quickly. To clarify, I am capable of sharpening knives on my own with the stones I have but sometimes like having the Bernal guys put a professional edge on my knives just for peace of mind. Today I brought a knife that I will admit is definitely beat up but really only has one major nick in the edge towards the base of it's edge. Upon arriving, I was approached by a tall gentleman who examined my admittedly beat up knife after I told him I knew that any edge put on it would not be perfect but that I just wanted something. After a quick inspection the dude literally just handed it back to me and said verbatim "I'll pass on that." Supposedly because of the nick in the knife which, if sharpened, wouldn't produce a good working edge because of the thickness of the knife.I asked him earnestly if there was anything he could do but he simply said that he didn't and or couldn't do anything for the knife. Again, I was just really disappointed especially since I know there are sharpening machines in the shop which could have at least done something for the blade. But according to that guy I guess I just gotta throw that knife away because it's past being saved. I'm not saying I won't come back and that the store isn't filled with dope people, but in my humble opinion, out of all the times I've had stuff sharpened here, seems like that guy was just being lazy on a Monday.

Stephanie Wong: Stumbled upon this place and holy knives. Lots of great selection of mostly kitchen knives among others as well as a canned fish section. They have knife sharpening connected to their store. Will def come back

Evan Turner: Easily spent 2+ hrs in here yesterday. Visiting from out of town and this was high on my list of places to visit. Like a candy store for the cook. Incredibly curated, knowledgeable staff and good vibes. Thanks.

Craig Sakuma: that we rolled up in plastic wrap for perfectly cylindrical roulades. We deboned, cubed, and seasoned the thigh and leg meat for a curry stew. The remaining bones and wings were used for chicken stock and they provided carrot, celery, onion, and ziplok bags so everything was prepped in class for you to take home and cook. Despite having high expectations, this class still exceeded all of them. I have a new life skill and will only buy whole chickens from here on out. I also plan to take their knife skills and knife sharpening classes next!!!

chris pester: Amazing spot and very talented sharpeners.

Ian Richter-Rodenburgh: Amazing shop with super knowledgeable staff and gorgeous knifes.

Ian O'Haire: Best spot in Berkeley for glass.

Brendon Ling: Would buy bong again 10/10

Benjamin Reuter: I came in looking for a bong and left with the piece of my dreams!I don't often go to Berkeley to buy glass but when i do, I ALWAYS END UP BUYING IT HERE. The staff are knowledgeable and kind. They are conversational without being pushy. Therey are 100% there to help you.The prices have always been reasonable. Not the cheapest in the bay but absolutely the best selection in berkeley. Furthermore i have NEVER walked out of Whelans feeling cheated or like i payed too much.Lastly, as we all know...it's not always a pleasant experience going into a glass shop in berkeley when you're a person of color. Often times, employees will follow you around and hover over you making their suspicion or outright disrespect clear. Not so at Whelans. Nobody is treated differently because of the color of their skin. I know because they were perfectly respectful and kind to my husband. At least stop by, i guarantee they will have something for you.

Veronica Flores: Love the selection, bought 3 lovely green bongs! And accessories! Gave good bargain too and great customer service

Kitsune Kun: Went in and was immediately met by kind and helpful staff who helped me pick out the best piece for myself as well as multiple pieces for my partner

Enter MMC: They have lots of choices, I was helped by a good seller.

Jamie: Awesome place. Super friendly & knowledgeable staff. They have always been happy to answer all of my questions and never tried to upsell me or pressure me into purchasing anything. The scale I bought from them a year ago is still working perfectly, it registered a test weight exactly on the dot. For anything they might sell, they are my first choice for places to stop by!

Miles Rubalcava-Cunan: Great spot and even better bongs

Maxwell Vargas: Love this place! Very friendly people working and always very helpful!

Shira Fitzpatrick-Zimet: Great staff!! Awesome selection

Chloe Verron: Friendly service, even though I showed up at closing time!

Midknight Anderson: It was my first time coming to the shop and I found this amazing Rick n Mitty price I’ve been looking for for so long and now I finally have it in my collection thanks to whelans smoke shops def 10/10 most preferred shop in the Berkeley area. 🤟🏿
