The park experiences a temperature inversion in summer, with higher elevations being 20 or more degrees warmer than lower elevations and general forecasts. While lower elevations on the coastal side of the mountain may be cool and comfortable, or even chilly when fog is present, higher elevations tend to be much hotter with limited shade and often less breeze.
Some tips include drinking plenty of water, carrying extra water and checking on park maps or with park staff where water fountains are located. It's also recommended to plan activities to finish by noon or start after 5pm when temperatures are cooler, and to plan activities at lower elevation on the coastal side of the mountain or in the redwood forest. Additionally, taking frequent breaks in the shade and knowing the symptoms of heat-related illness are important.
Some popular trails and areas to explore include Rocky Point Road & Trail, Steep Ravine Beach, Steep Ravine Trail, Coast View Trail (multi-use), Heather Cut-off, Redwood Creek Trail, Dipsea Trail, and many more. These trails offer stunning views and a range of experiences for visitors.
The park offers a range of amenities and services, including volunteer-led information centers at the East Peak Visitor Center and the Gravity Car Barn, where visitors can get information and buy merchandise and snacks. There is also a beautiful outdoor theatre, the Mountain Theater, which hosts outdoor plays and astronomy programs. Additionally, visitors can camp at Pantoll or Bootjack Campgrounds or reserve a group campsite or rustic cabin through the park's agency.
The park is known for its breathtaking vistas, which include views of the Farallon Islands 25 miles out to sea, the Marin County hills, San Francisco Bay and City, the East Bay, and Mount Diablo. On rare occasions, the snow-covered Sierra Nevada Mountain Range can be seen 150 miles away. The park's scenery is also characterized by its deep canyons and sweeping hillsides, which are cloaked with cool redwood forests, oak woodlands, open grasslands, and sturdy chaparral.
