The playground is thought to have been the nation's first public playground, making it a groundbreaking concept in its era. It was originally called the Sharon Quarters for Children when it opened in 1888.
The playground features a climbing wall shaped like waves, a rope climbing structure, and a historic concrete slide. It also has a picnic area adjacent to the carousel and playground.
You can ride on a beautiful carousel with 62 colorfully painted menagerie animals, including a dragon, camel, goat, horses, frogs, dogs, roosters, and pigs. The carousel also has painted panels inside depicting Bay Area landscapes.
The cost to ride the carousel is $2 for adults, $1 per ride for children ages 6 to 12 years, and free for children 5 and under if accompanied by a paying adult. Children under 40 in height must be accompanied by a paying adult.
You can bring a blanket and some food and make it a perfect Saturday afternoon! The playground has plenty of green space, a sand pit, swings for toddlers and bigger kids, and a nice bathroom nearby. It's a great place to escape the city and let your kids tire themselves out!
