Karen McCowen, MD, is a board-certified endocrinologist. She has a special interest in the management of diabetes in pregnancy, technologies for managing type 1 diabetes, thyroid biopsy and thyroid cancer, and pituitary and adrenal diseases. Dr. McCowen also has expertise in providing gender-affirming care to transgender and nonbinary patients.

Dr. McCowen has been published in numerous publications including American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, New England Journal of Medicine, Annals of Internal Medicine, Encyclopedia of Human Nutrition, Current Opinions in Gastroenterology and Nutrition in Clinical Practice.

Before joining UC San Diego Health, Dr. McCowen was a physician in the endocrine divisions at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Brigham and Women's Hospital at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. McCowen completed fellowships in nutrition and metabolism and clinical nutrition from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. She also completed fellowship training in metabolism from Joslin Diabetes Center. She completed a clinical fellowship in endocrinology from several facilities in Boston, Massachusetts at Harvard Medical School. She completed her residency in internal medicine at the Mayo Clinic and received her medical degree from Trinity College in Ireland. She is board certified in internal medicine and endocrinology.

Hard to park because it seems it's always construction there. I told the doctor I will go to La Jolla from now on.

First and foremost, I'm really, really happy with my provider, Dr. Karen Mccowen, but we have a lot of difficult connecting. I was able to connect on my end on my phone, but they didn't see me at all. So, we tried a second time and it still didn't work because this time I wasn't able to connect period. So she ended up actually phoning me. They need to fix the system a bit better for these tela-calls. I was not pleased at all how this went, not only that it created a problem the next day when they sent a letter saying, I missed the appointment which was not true. So I had to fix that which again was annoying but that's about it. Thanks.

Dr. Mccowen is a great doctor she always explains the diabetes disease process in ways we understand keeps us updated on new developments . She tells us of new products on the market to help me better. I would recommend this Doctor to anyone looking for a great Endocrinologist.

I just would like to inform, the person at the reception was extremely helpful, she was very kind and then careful, and then, really much appreciate that because I came into the appointment a little bit nervous, but she, with her help, that I was really calm down. So I just wanted to comment and I didn't get her name, but whoever was at the reception desk, I would like to really thank her for her help.

I am very pleased with the appointment that I had with Dr. McCowen. I have seen a few Endocrinologists over the past number of months, looking for a practitioner like Dr. McCowen! I can't express how thankful I am to have found Dr. McCowen to help me in managing my Adrenal Insufficiency!

Everyone there was really helpful. Helped us in and out. Really appreciated doors being opened for us. Can be a little difficult when i push my Mother in her wheelchair.
