In February 2005, UC San Diego received a $10 million gift from Richard and Maria (Gaby) Sulpizio to help construct a state-of-the-art cardiovascular patient care and clinical research facility. In recognition, our facility is called the Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center.

The center, which opened in 2011, unifies ambulatory, clinical, and inpatient heart and stroke care in one convenient location. It has also won recognition for its world-class design, including being named one of the nation's Most Beautiful Hospitals in 2012, and Modern Healthcare's highest design honor. Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center was the first acute care medical facility in the San Diego region to receive LEED Gold certification from the United States Green Building Council (USGBC)

It has 54 inpatient beds, four cardiovascular ORs, cardiac catheterization laboratories, a noninvasive cardiovascular laboratory, and outpatient clinics. It also includes an emergency department/ER.

Construction Alert: As part of scheduled night-time utility work on Medical Center Drive, a section of the road near Shiley Eye Institute will be closed weeknights starting May 22, 9 p.m. – 5 a.m. for approximately four weeks. During this time, please follow detours marked by lighted signage. This work is part of the Viterbi Family Vision Research construction project.
