4worldlovers: Monterey County and City of Salinas Animal Services are working together and under one shelter on 160 Hitchcock Road as of April 1, 2020 as we continue to consolidate our programs. All animals that would normally come in to each respective shelter are now being housed at the Monterey County Animal Shelter and are listed on this site together. As services continue to merge, this website will be updated.


Monterey County is providing field services within the City of Salinas and during this transition, the following are the contacts for related services.


**To file a complaint for City of Salinas or Unincorporated Monterey County areas related to barking dogs, abandoned animals, habitual dogs running loose, animal feces, dog bites, unpermitted livestock, past tense animal attack, feral cat issues or dead animals on public property in Salinas, please click here for the online complaint form.

Please note: Anonymous complaints are not processed so please leave a message as needed and include your contact information so that we can return your message. We are working to respond to all calls as quickly as possible.

We are open to the public Tuesday-Saturday from 1-5pm for licensing, owner redemption and other shelter business. Adoption hours are specifically between 1-4pm.

Due to customer volume and to limit the amount of people in our lobby, we have a new self-check-in. When you visit us, please read the sign by the front door and use your phone to scan the QR code to check yourself in. Please remain outside or in your car until you receive a text that it is your turn. If you have a stray animal or the QR code doesn't work, please come inside to check in. Thank you.

Our adoption program is in person only, first come, first serve. We are not currently placing adoption holds on any animals. Please visit us during the adoption hours above if you are interested in adopting a shelter animal. If you are adopting a dog and have one at home already, we will ask you to bring it for a "meet and greet".

As of July 1, 2021, Pet licensing programs for both the City of Salinas and Monterey County are being processed at Monterey County. Animal Services continues to accept stray dogs and sick, injured and abandoned dogs, cats, rabbits and other domestic animals from unincorporated Monterey County, City of Salinas, City of Marina, City of Greenfield and City of Carmel. If you find a healthy cat, that does not appear to be in danger, please leave it be. Cats are not prohibited from wandering outside of their property and we know they frequently do just that.(If there is a situation outside of this that may mean the cat needs assistance, please call us). Animal Services wants to ensure that our limited resources for cats are for those that truly need us.
