The scenery is beautiful, especially along the lake where you can often see college students practicing their sculling. The terrain can be quite wild due to the tailings left by the mining operations that occurred here in the past, but there are also oak-studded hills and open plains.
Take Highway 50 east of Sacramento toward Folsom to the Hazel Avenue exit. Go north on Hazel (across the freeway and the river) about 2.5 km to Sunset Boulevard. Turn right on Sunset, continue to the stop sign at the bottom of the hill. Turn left on Main Avenue (the only direction you can go) approximately 250m to the horse stables on the right. Park in the lot closer to the road, not in the stables lot.
You can go for a hike, whether it's a short 15-minute walk or a longer 3-10 hour hike on the river side bike trail. You can also go for a bike ride, have a nature walk, or even go paddling on the lake.
Visitors have mentioned the stunning views of the area from the bluff, where you can see from the coast range to the Sierra peaks on a clear day. You can also spot wildlife such as deer, birds, and turkey vultures. The nature preserve is also a great place for a peaceful walk, with its open and quiet atmosphere.
Unfortunately, there are no public toilets available, so plan your trip accordingly. However, parking is free, and you can bring your Poppy Pass to enjoy free parking if you're part of the Folsom Lake SRA.
