This park features a football field surrounded by an all-weather track, three lighted soccer fields, restrooms, bleacher areas, sports lighting, landscaping, and parking.
The park was originally developed in 1936 as a storm water detention basin, and was later improved for recreational purposes in 1950. Over the years, additional features were added, including baseball diamonds, soccer fields, and lighting.
The park underwent a major renovation in 2014, which included the construction of a new football field, all-weather track, and track and field facilities, as well as the addition of restrooms, bleacher areas, and sports lighting. The renovation also included the installation of a low-flow drainage system, a pump station, and stormwater treatment devices.
The park's design incorporates several environmental features, including native and drought-tolerant landscaping, efficient irrigation, and bio-swales to reduce trash and bacteria in the water. The park also features a bike path that connects to the nearby bike trail.
The park's renovation was funded through a combination of sources, including $9.9 million from the Los Angeles County Park and Open Space District, City of Long Beach Infrastructure funds, Open Space Bonds, and a $1 million donation from Occidental Petroleum Corporation.
