Our House Grief Support Center: what do users think?

Caligirl (CaliGirl): I lost my father to Pancreatic Cancer 2018. My father was my everything. I wanted to join my father, I only kept myself alive for my mother. My father's Hospice recommended Our House, then I had a meeting at SAG-AFTRA with a Social worker. She also recommended me Our House. I called and made an appointment. The environment was very peaceful. I had a good feeling about it. Then I got a call and my grief group session started on January 3rd. Nine months of Our House, made me feel like a normal person avoiding all the criticism of my grieving process from family/friends/others.Our group bonded and at the end, everyone opened up. Our group still meets once a month, sometimes every other month. But we are all there for each other. My brother unexpectedly passed away in February 25th. I am handling this situation better, since I learned the tools from Our House sessions.I didn't find a time to leave a voice mail about Our House experience because of the timing of my brother's passing. I need to find an Our House location close to Glendale. Because my brother's tween sister, really needs the help. She is going through, what I went through....Thank you Our House for all you do, you save many of our grieving tortured souls...

DM: This place can be hit or miss. I do think it is possible to have a wonderful experience in group but my own was traumatic, specifically because of a lack of boundaries from the group leaders in preventing inappropriate cross talk from a mentally unstable group member. Grief is a mysterious and challenging process and some people lash out and bully as a reaction to avoiding their own sensitivity. I will take some accountability for my experience as I am sensitive to energy and having a large group of people expressing their grief was at times overwhelming. That said, allowing someone to make judgments and ask interrogative questions in group is simply unacceptable. I think a healthy group dynamic and structured support from the group leaders is crucial for positive experiences in this type of situation. In addition, I didn鈥檛 appreciate the response of Joanne the program leader when I articulated my concerns, it was quite defensive and lacking in empathy. I want places like Our House to succeed which is why I am leaving 4 stars. I鈥檓 just sad it wasn鈥檛 a fit for me.

Nelly Acosta: This place is great to help the children with the lost of a loved one.

Christine Farrell: I am so grateful for their support in my grief

Jeremy Isabella: Grief is a complicated and uncomfortable subject. It鈥檚 something most people have a difficult time talking about. Our House is an amazing grief support center. They give those who have suffered a loss, no matter what type of loss, a safe place to talk about how they are feeling and coping with their loss. There is no judgement at Our House. Everyone deals with grief differently. If I could use a metaphor to describe Our House, I would say that they are like the medics on a battle field taking care of the wounded. They leave no one behind.

Erit Yellen: Changed the course of my grief and the way I will process it for the rest of my life. Grateful to have gone through the group experience.

Tracy D: I'm very grateful that Our House exists and that is an available resource for people living with grief. I hope anyone struggling with grief who reads this will given it a chance. It definitely helped me in myriad ways and I'm still in regular contact with the members of my support group members. Our House is a beautiful thing.

Charlotte Baratta: The office has a lovely homey vibe and is very welcoming. The staff are very kind and knowledgable during a time where gentle, sensitive support is needed. They hold groups for kids and adults who are grieving - such a valuable resource that is so needed

Matricia Hopkins: I am most thankful to Our House Grief Support Center for the 18 month support that it provided to me beginning 5 months following the passing of my husband. I was placed in a group setting involving men and women in the same age group and whose loss began within the same period as my own. The facilitators allowed each person to speak at will with no coercion. There was no criticism. I was able to introduce my husband and make him real to the other group members. There was always mutual respect within the group setting. I discovered that it is ok to be angry and afraid as a result of my loss. I also learned that breathing exercises are great for those days when you are feeling out of sorts and just need to somewhat relax and regroup. I understand that some people will not want to listen when i want to talk about my love one therefore I try not to be insensitive. I have the assurance that my fellow group members are there for me for support. I also learned that there is no shelf life on my grief. I talk frequently about my husband because he is still with me in spirit. I left the center with a sense of hope and a lifetime of support from people when I first met them was merely grieving stranger and who I now call my surviving family.Thank You Our House Group Support Center.

Jamie Arnold: Camp Erin is an amazing experience for campers and volunteers. The campers learn simple coping skills they can take home with them. And friendship and bonds that will be everlasting and unlike anything they could experience through school. They learn that there are other people that have experienced loss like them and that they can share that common encounter with death.
