Lully Philippe: If you're an adult seeking to conquer the deep end LOOK NO FURTHER! I've searched and researched extensively on Yelp for the best class available in LA, so I've done the hard part for you--THIS is it! Though there are many swim lessons on Yelp with great ratings, finding a good class curated for adults was easier said than done as most of these businesses are geared towards infants and kids.I took a highly rated class on Yelp prior to this in October. Though they taught adult learners, it became clear they almost exclusively taught children. Thus I don't think they understood what is key to teaching an adult, such as the importance of tackling our preconceptions and mental blocks about the water. There was no discussion about that, which I found to make a difference in my ability to learn and be comfortable in the water. The class was 20mins long, maybe appropriate for kids & babies, but way too quick for me to learn & practice. Even with that class being one on one learning, I still made WAY more progress in a small group with Matt's class! So happy I found Swimming LA! The course is two 3hr lessons which was ideal/convenient for me and I believe most adults. I'd personally rather take two 3hr classes then eight 45min classes, or twelve 30min classes. Matt's class is the only one I found that offers this layout. This class isn't about learning different technical strokes if that's what you're looking for. You do learn to flutter kick through the water and swim about that way, but this course really is about becoming comfortable, competent, and safe in all depths of water. With a series simple exercises in the water & a little bit of teaching outside of the water, Matt does a great job of breaking down your fears and misconceptions about water and yourself in water. Knowledge really is power--we may know in the back our head that swimming & floating IS possible, but the problem is, if you don't believe it, that mental block isn't going to allow you to master it. All the simple teachings & exercises come together to prove to YOURSELF that you can be safe in any depth of water. You will SEE & BELIEVE that you can float & swim in the deep end. By the end of the course you will be comfortable & relaxed in 10ft of water, UNATTACHED to the sides of the pool, and doing cannonballs into the deep end! Thank you Matt! A huge check off my bucket list!
Thomas Jonsson: Matt has been a great teacher for my two kids for the last three years. We started both of them around eight months old. My three-year-old has progressed to being very comfortable in the water. Matt creates a great environment that not only gets the kids comfortable in water but also allows them to socially interact with both other adults and kids their ages. We would recommend this class for anybody looking to get their kids comfortable with the water. Thank you again Matt.
Sanam Khamneipur: who had been taking Matt's class for months having progressed so much that with a little nudge, he could go from being above water, down to the swimming under water to the bottom of the shallow end of the pool, grabbing a ring that was on the pool's floor and coming up with it. I was so impressed and it was clear that the thoughtful water skill-building, coaching and baby/child-centered approach to the class had produced that impressive result. Both my husband and I would highly recommend Swimming LA to anyone looking for swim classes for the child and can't wait to start classes back up for our daughter, with Matt!
Leah Sultan: when they had little to no experience in the water. It took about three classes before the kids were comfortable, which Matt told us to expect. Our daughter quickly went from crying at even getting into the pool with me holding her to jumping in on her own and diving for rings at the bottom of the pool. When we went to a resort with a pool a few months after the classes ended, our kids still had confidence and comfort in the pool. Matt is very knowledgeable and wonderful with kids!
Ashley Heiselt: summer he asked to do "up and unders" in the ocean. As a former swimmer, Matt is wonderful with the kids and adults and he knows how to teach. I never expected the progress that my son made while at Swimming LA. I really hope El Segundo allows Matt to re-open soon as I will be there with my daughter!
Kayleigh MacPherson: but wow, we were blown away by the care and attention that Matt put into these lessons. He is wonderful with toddlers/infants and exudes a calm patient energy that is very helpful for little ones navigating such a new and at times unfamiliar environment
Ansley Smith: We started taking our daughter to swim classes when she was only 9 weeks old! Matt was very patient with us as first time parents and we really appreciated that! Luckily, she took to the water pretty naturally and was pretty comfortable in it. We saw improvements each week and we're so happy that we enrolled her so young. She's two now and absolutely loves the water now and we have SwimmingLA to thank for that!
Jason Mitchell: After we go to Matt's swim classes, for the next few days my son is constantly saying "Matt" "Matt" because he wants to go back right away. We have done a bunch of swimming with our son and nothing compares to the classes at Matt's house and at the pool where we also did lessons with Matt. We started lesson's when my son was just 6 months old and Matt made it really easy for him to get comfortable in the water, going under, floating on his back, etc. From that point on he just got better and better and when he was about 1 he was already able to grab rings under water. It's cool that Matt is able to combine a class that is super fun for the kids and also one where they really learn how to be comfortable in the water and swim.
Lauren Baker Fagan: and a few months in he was diving to the bottom of the pool for rings. Matt is excellent with babies and toddlers and we trusted him completely. Even in a small group setting, our son received a lot of personalized attention and quickly gained confidence. We learned great skills that we used to continue teaching our son even outside of class and I couldn鈥檛 recommend SwimmingLA more!
Lydia Antonini: Can鈥檛 say enough great things about Matt鈥檚 classes, we started our oldest at 6mos and it was one of the best decisions we made
Andrew Beck: My son attended Matt's swimming lessons when he was a little over 1 year old. It went really, really well and I recommend it to anybody, probably starting a little younger than we did actually. In my son's case, he was definitely nervous about it the first week, but literally went from shaking and screaming in week 1 to no cries in week 3 and the most amazing proud smiles by week 4. It's really awesome to watch that happen and swimming is still one of his favorite things to do. Great program, the instruction worked for us certainly and seemed to be great for everybody else in the class also.
Abigail Hough: We started taking our son Coach Matt at the El Segundo location when he was 20 months. He was a bit apprehensive at first but after 2-3 classes he knew what to expect and didn't want to get out of the pool at the end! After the first month he was doing "up and unders" and jumping off the side of the pool. The class time seems short but it's just the right amount of time to hold their attention and you can have a few minutes before and after at the other end of the pool to get used to the water and practice new skills. Unfortunately, COVID happened and we weren't able to continue lessons but we bought an inflatable pool for our backyard and our son would sing all the songs and try the same activities as in class. 7 months later he still counts "1-2-3 up and under," it's amazing! We highly recommend Coach Matt and Swimming LA! We tried a few other infant swimming programs before but were underwhelmed and they lacked individual attention but Coach Matt's program is a real winner.
Suzanne Singh: to gain new skills
Ruth Martin del Campo: My sister and I took the 2 Adult swimming classes with great results. We did not know how to swim in the deep end, but by the end of the 2nd class we were jumping and diving into the deep end! Matt teaches you in a way that helps you understand that there is nothing to be scared of. Classes are 4 people or less with lots of space to social distance. I definitely recommend it!
Nick Natter: Coach Matt is awesome. He's great with the kids, and with his program, my youngest son got comfortable in the water much faster than my oldest son who had swim lessons with another swim school. Hes very knowledgeable when it comes to very young kids in the water and I was really impressed at how quickly my 8 month old went from hating to loving the water. He was a full blown water baby after only a few lessons. Thanks Matt!
Emilie Schroeder: with my older son, now 5, and we never really saw much progress. With Matt, I felt like my son got individual attention even though we were in a group class. He really pays attention to each child's needs and helps them work through it. His manner is very patient, calm and has a sense of humor. He makes class fun and encourages the parents too when he can see they're a little nervous, as I was! After a few classes, I was shocked to see that Lucas was almost at the same level as my older son! Another plus is that Coach Matt is always there week after week. In other classes, the teacher would change week to week, and that was really hard for my older son to connect/build trust with the teacher. Lucas definitely had a connection with Coach Matt!
Ena De Guzman - Tioseco: Been taking our son to swimming classes with Matt at the El Segundo Pool since he was 8 months old. We did a free trial and he loved the water so we enrolled. Our son has learned a lot from the routine and songs. He is already familiar with the songs from the 3rd session. It's been a fun bonding activity for us and now a great weekly activity for him.Matt is a great instructor and makes sure your child gets some one on one time with him during your first few visits until the baby is comfortable in the water. Luckily our son has had a majority of good days while in swim class. Makeup classes are easy to schedule and Matt is excellent with communication for any schedule changes or pool cleaning closures. He has been doing this for quite a long time and is very good with babies and safety in the pool. The El Segundo location is an indoor heated pool. Great for all year round classes. Street parking is easy. Most parents bring a stroller to keep their stuff in. Grandparents/nannies allowed to watch. We definitely recommend trying it out and seeing if your baby likes it.
Daniel Huezo: Our son started swim class with Matt when he was 3 months old. He is now 20 months and very comfortable in the water. We are only ending our participation because of some financial issues. Matt is a great teacher and has been a positive influence on our son's early development! He has also coached us so well that we will both be able to continue practicing what we have learned in the class. This has been the best investment we have made early in our son's life. Matt is fantastic. A simple thank you is not enough for all he has taught us. We appreciate all you have done for our son.
Audrey C.: Going to the guppy classes at Swimming LA is one of the best things we could have done for our baby. We attended Matt鈥檚 classes from the time our son was 7 months to 15 months old. We only stopped going because we moved away from Los Angeles. Matt has a consistent routine with the babies that truly helps them start to understand holding their breath, simple counting, and basic water safety. I can鈥檛 recommend Swimming LA enough!
Jamie Harvey: I really recommend Swimming LA. My son Sebastian went when he was 6 months old and quickly became very comfortable in the water. Matt is an excellent coach and guides the parents and the babies all the way thru the lessons. My son now loves the water and my wife and I can see he cannot wait to go in the pool. This is down to Matt and what he teaches in the class.Matts definitely one of the best swim coaches for babies in the LA area for sure! Highly recommend him
